“How often should I update my professional headshot?” is a question I get asked quite a bit. I have had clients that come to me roughly every 6 months and some that come to me for the first time having not updated their headshot for 10+ years. So, I would like to give you some good tips on when you should consider updating your professional headshot.
1. Career Change
The same headshot you used for your career as a hair stylist will not be as appealing to your potential clientele when you become a realtor. Keep this in mind when you are updating your LinkedIn profile to reflect your career change but your profile photo doesn’t “fit” with the new clientele you are looking to attract.
2. After Moving
You may want to reflect a recent move in your professional headshot. Moving to a new area means new potential clients. The scenery in your headshot can serve to help you promote yourself to clients in that area or similar areas. As an example, people who enjoy living in cities may enjoy working with someone who’s personality also drew them to the city.
3. Update Your Style
When your personal style changes, you get a drastically new haircut, or even if you experience weight changes…you want to make sure you are recognizable to your clients. Today, social media makes it so that clients can get to know you before they even meet you. When a client sees your professional image is drastically different than the image on your personal social media, it can be confusing to know if they are contacting the right person.
4. Periodically (I suggest yearly).
Much like the reasons above, everyone is constantly changing. It feels subtle to you, but others can see big differences in your appearance as you get older, go through life changes, etc. Updating your professional headshot yearly will help clients keep up with you as you change. It is also a great way to gain new content for your social media. I always attempt a few different looks with my professional headshot sessions so that clients can have versatile options to share over social media.
Make sure your headshot consistently reflects who you are.
I look forward to working with you!
